One Loop Portrait a Week

French Photographer and Director, Romain Laurent has created some absurd but amazing looping portraits. He started off creating these as a personal challenge, “As far as the intention of the series, it’s a way for me to explore a hybrid medium, experiment and being spontaneous while sticking to a short weekly deadline”.

He manages to capture some weird and funny situations featuring subjects doing curiously interesting things. He says “There isn’t a common concept between each loop, I just ‘go with the flow’ and see what comes to my mind each week.”

You could have a lot of fun with this, imagine what your profile picture could do…

Visible WiFi Signals

Ever thought about all those invisible WiFi signals that must surround us all the time? Thought not. Well Luis Hernan obviously has. He has created a series of photographs showing the presence of wireless signals. The ghostlike images were created from a custom-build device that translates WiFi signal strength into colours and then uses a long-exposure on the camera to create these fascinating but eerie images.

PhD student Luis says “I believe our interaction with this landscape of electromagnetic signals, described by Antony Dunne as Hertzian Space, can be characterised in the same terms as that with ghosts and spectra. They are both paradoxical entities, whose untypical substance allows them to be an invisible presence”. These photographs are somewhat haunting in the same sense, they reflect a presence that is there and only captured by the camera not visible to the naked eye.

Stuff Being Thrown at My Head

These light-hearted photographs titled “Stuff Being Thrown at My Head” are by Latvian photographer and graduate student, Kaija Straumanis. The self-portrait images capture various objects being thrown at her head, somehow colliding quite gracefully on impact. I like the way each image captures the exact moment of impact, her gaze remaining completely focused despite some of the random objects hurting more than just a little! Could this be the new planking fad…

Garbage Girls

I love these photos by photographer Maya Fuhr entitled Garbage Girls. It’s almost a ‘Where’s Wally’ game, the clutter making it hard to find the subject of the photo straight away. The unashamed look of the girls surrounded by their endless littered possessions is reminiscent of their age… although I don’t remember my room ever being this messy!
